The Black-Eyed Susans
When I walked outside today, I took a different route. Instead of walking around my gardens and out to my garage I walked to the empty lot next to mine. It is far from empty. There is nothing in the lot and yet there is so much there. In human terms it is without a house or a building or a road so it is empty. It hasn't been mowed in three years now. It is exactly the same size as my lot 110m x 60m (approximately a Canadian Football League field) and in human terms my lot is full. It has a house, a garage, a greenhouse, a driveway, a firepit, a lawn, a few trees and shrubs and many gardens. But in natural terms, my lot is mostly empty. The majority of it is lawn that consists of 5-10 different plants and my large driveway that is just gravel. The empty lot on the other hand is full. From what I can see, it has hundreds of plants and insects including poplar trees, willow trees, ants, milkweed, tent caterpillars, cattails, earthworms burdock, wild roses and the two Black-eyed Susans.
If look closely, you can see the window to my office in the background where I look out on this empty lot while I write. I guess it isn't as empty as it looks.
